A simple guide to podiatry referrals.
Not sure if it's time to involve a foot & ankle specialist? Early referral preserves mobility, prevents complications, and improves outcomes. Here's a quick reference.
The simple rule of thumb: if foot or ankle pain hasn't clearly improved after about four weeks of appropriate conservative care — or a wound isn't on track to heal — it's time to refer. When in doubt, refer early. We're glad to co-manage.
When to refer a patient
Consider a referral to Precision Specialty Care when a patient has any of the following:
- Any diabetic foot ulcer or at-risk diabetic foot
- Foot or ankle pain not improving after ~4 weeks of conservative care
- Non-healing foot wounds, ulcers, or infections
- Signs of infection: increasing pain, redness, odor, or drainage
- Ingrown or fungal toenails needing a procedure
- Bunions, hammertoes, or other painful deformities
- Heel pain or suspected plantar fasciitis not responding to care
- Sports injuries: sprains, fractures, or tendonitis
- Numbness, tingling, or neuropathy in the feet
- Limbs at risk — when limb preservation is a concern
- Patients needing custom orthotics or bracing
- Any foot or ankle concern that may benefit from specialty care
How to refer
Helpful to include: patient demographics & insurance, the foot or ankle concern and its duration, current treatment, and any relevant history, labs, or imaging. We'll keep you updated on your patient's progress throughout treatment.
Frequently asked questions.
When should I refer a patient to a podiatrist?
A good rule of thumb is the "4-week rule": if foot or ankle pain hasn't clearly improved after about four weeks of appropriate conservative care, it's time to refer. Refer sooner for diabetic foot ulcers, signs of infection, non-healing wounds, or any case where a limb may be at risk. When in doubt, refer early — earlier specialized care leads to better outcomes.
What conditions do you treat?
We provide complete foot and ankle care, including diabetic foot care, heel and arch pain, bunions and hammertoes, ingrown and fungal nails, sports and overuse injuries, non-healing wounds and ulcers, and custom orthotics. Limb preservation is a particular area of focus.
Does a patient need a referral to be seen?
We welcome referrals from physicians and other providers, and many insurance plans require one. Patients are also welcome to contact us directly to ask about scheduling. We'll help verify what your specific plan requires.
How quickly will my patient be seen?
New patients are typically scheduled within the same week. For urgent concerns, please call us directly so we can prioritize the visit.
Will I receive updates on my patient's progress?
Yes. We work closely with referring providers and keep you informed throughout your patient's treatment, coordinating care so everyone stays on the same page.
Do you accept insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid?
Yes. We accept all major insurance plans, Medicare, and Medicaid. If you have questions about coverage, give us a call and we'll be happy to help you confirm your benefits.
Do you offer custom orthotics?
Yes. We provide custom-molded orthotics and bracing designed around your foot mechanics to relieve pain, correct alignment, and support long-term foot health.
